3 tips to overcome fear and start dancing.

We get it. It can be really scary to put yourself out there and try something new. Many of us are afraid of being judged or not being able to keep up. BUT the whole point of a class is to learn. It takes time, dedication and hard work to get good at any new skills. So don’t be afraid of “failure”. The only way to fail is by not showing up. We all start somewhere. And trust me if you are brave enough to start something new as an adult we are rooting for you! Here are a few tips to get you started. Get excited to start learning!

It’s called a class for a reason. We’re here to learn. The point of a class is not to get all the steps right away, but instead to progress with time and practice. With any new skill we all start somewhere. Imagine, I just picked up a guitar for the very first time. I‘m definitely not rocking a guitar solo right away. I’m going to fumble with the cords, be a little choppy and mess up. The same goes for your first dance class (or first 100 classes!!!). Try not to be discouraged if you don’t pick up all the moves right away, instead celebrate that you did something that scares you!! The steps and freedom of expression will come with practice.

No one is judging you.

We all fear judgement and it can hold so many of us back from doing the things we really want to do. I’ve heard it so many times, “I want to dance but I’m afraid I’ll look ridiculous”. We are so afraid of people judging us but the reality is everyone is too busy paying attention to themselves(aka judging themselves). When you realize this, it's so liberating. Most people are focused on their own performance and growth, preoccupied with themselves, they don't have time to be judging you. AND if they do happen to watch you dance, chances are they’ve been in your shoes and are cheering you on!

Have fun and enjoy the process

Try to get out of your head and just enjoy!!! Moving your body in new ways is certainly challenging but it's also a ton of fun. Relax and enjoy the music and the community. If your dance skills improve that's a bonus. Dance has so many aspects to it, no matter how long you’ve been training you will always have room to grow and explore.

If you’ve been wanting to dance but you’re nervous and worried about looking silly consider this your sign. One of the best ways to grow is to face your fears and step out of your comfort zone.
